Your Guide to Dental Implants

If you have recently lost a permanent tooth, know that you’re not alone. According to studies by The American College of Prosthodontists, approximately 178 million citizens of the country have lost at least one tooth in their lifetime. Tooth loss comes with a unique set of long term challenges. From eating difficulties to speech problems, a missing tooth can hinder some of the most basic, day to day activities.

Decades ago, losing a tooth meant it was gone forever, and the only remedy for missing teeth was bridgework and dentures. Fortunately, advances in modern dentistry have enabled dental experts to restore the smile of individuals with missing teeth through cosmetic dental treatments, such as dental implants. In addition to improving masticatory performance, this artificial tooth replacement also boosts self esteem significantly.

Curious to know more about the procedure? Here’s everything you need to know:

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are essentially artificial replacements for roots of decayed teeth. Typically composed of titanium, these implants offer a restorative solution that is both durable and comfortable. Another factor that gives dental implants an edge over other tooth replacement procedures is that they can be customized to look and feel exactly like natural teeth.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Implant placement takes place in multiple visits. In the first step of the process, the titanium post needs to be screwed into the jawbone of the candidate. After numbing the area with local anesthetics, dentists slice the gum tissue and flap it backwards. This exposes the underlying bone, the drilling of which makes room for the implant.

Post-drilling, the implant fixed into the bone and gum tissue is sutured back into position. The implant then fuses with the jawbone over a period of 4 to 6 months in a process known as osseointegration. Once the healing time has elapsed, installation of an artificial tooth over the anchor can take place.

Who Is An Eligible Candidate For Implants?

Only dental professionals can evaluate prospective candidates for dental implants to determine whether or not they are eligible for the treatment. However, a good candidate should generally meet the following criteria:

  1. Adequate bone support: As jaw bones support dental implants, adequate bone density is mandatory for successful implants.
  2. Excellent overall health: Success rate of dental implants depends on the overall health of the candidate. Health issues like gum disease and diabetes can to failure of the implant.
  3. Commitment to oral care: Recipients of dental implants need to practice good oral hygiene practices and stay committed to their oral health, to preserve the implants for a lifetime.
